We have seen the name spelled in many different ways; as, Hoyt, Hoit, Hoyte, Hoite, Hoytt, Hoyet, Hoyett, Hoytte, Hoyght, Haight, Hight, Hite, Hyatt, Hayte, Haite, Hayt, Haigh, and Hayts. In the earlier periods of this country's history, there seemed to be no settled orthography for proper names, especially surnames, and each clerk and recorder spelt as he/she pleased. Sometimes individuals even wrote their own names differently at different times, and some evidently did not know the proper method of spelling them. Whether all of those whose names have been spelled in either of the last eight ways above mentioned are descended from the Hoyts, we cannot say. The three most common ways of spelling the name in the United States, at the present time, are Hoyt, Hoit and Hoitt.
My line started changing when Moses Hoyt was a taverner in Plattsburgh, NY., 1827. It was Moses Hoyt in the 1830 census of Plattsburgh, Clinton, N.Y. He bought land in DuPage County, Illinois in the fall of 1837, as Moses Hoit. In 1843, Moses Hoit of DuPage county and State of Illinois was bound by the Probate court as surety in the Probate of his son, George Washington Hoit, late of Dundee in Kane county and State of Illinois, estate. Sarah Hoit, widow, applied for Letters of administration. George William Hoit, son of George Washington Hoit, kept and used the name Hoit.
And from another Hoyt line, somewhere in the early 1800s, Nicholas Smith Hoyt decided that his last name looked better in script when written with an “I”, instead of a “Y”. So he changed his name and all of his children and their descentants took the name Hoit.
Need a good chuckle? Robert Hoit has been keeping the various notes from his jobs and from the mail, showing how people hear the name Hoit: Huit, Hoish, White, Hoit, Hoight, Hoydt, Hait, Holt, Heit, Hiot, Hoit Hoit, Hoyte, Hof, Hoyt, Hoih, Hayt, Hart, Hirt, Hout, Hoist, Hoilt, Hort, Hoiti, Voit, Hott, Noit and Hoiut.
Why not ask, How do you spell your last name?.
